Four Gold Medals. One Silver. Judged in Tokyo.

Four PepperGreen Estate wines were entered into the 2026 Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards, one of the most respected international wine competitions in Asia. All four were recognised. Over 4,000 wines from more than 30 countries were blind tasted in Tokyo by a panel of 430 women wine professionals. Wines are judged not just on quality but on how well they pair with food, particularly Japanese and Asian cuisine. For a family-owned vineyard in the Southern Highlands, this kind of international recognition is quite special.

Wine Profiles

2024 Semi-Dry Riesling Single Vineyard

Two gold medals for the 2024 Semi-Dry Riesling Single Vineyard (Gold and 2026 Best Wine Pairing with Sushi). That is not just our opinion. 430 women wine professionals in Tokyo blind tasted over 4,000 wines. Crisp acidity, gentle sweetness, clean finish. It works just as well with spicy Thai and Vietnamese dishes as with a plate of nigiri.

Tasting Notes

  • Light, bright straw in the glass.
  • Fresh lime blossom nose with a mineral which carries on into a clean, fresh palate.
  • Drink now or enjoy aged.

2024 Rosé Single Vineyard

Light, fresh and savoury in the Provençal style. Strawberry, rhubarb and wild herbs. The all-women judging panel in Tokyo singled this one out as a standout for food pairing. Brilliant with prawns, seafood, charcuterie or just a long afternoon. Gold Medal quality at an everyday price.

Tasting Notes

  • Pretty in pink
  • Soft floral and herbal nose
  • A juicy fruit-driven semi-dry Rosé with notes of strawberry, rhubarb and wild herbs
  • Enjoy chilled.

2021 Tempranillo

Spanish grape. Australian highlands. Gold Medal in Tokyo. Dark ruby, tobacco, blood plum and spicy tannins. Recognised alongside wines from Rioja, Bordeaux and beyond. The kind of wine you open when there is something on the grill, and nowhere you need to be.

Tasting Notes

  • Dark ruby red in the glass.
  • Tobacco, herbaceous and blood plum on the nose.
  • Medium-bodied and herbal with a strong plum fruit drive.
  • Spicy and savoury tannin finish.

2022 Pinot Noir Single Vineyard (Coming Soon)

Silver Medal and it has not even been released yet. Our 2022 Pinot Noir earned Silver at the Sakura Awards before a single bottle left the vineyard. Cool climate Pinot that rewards patience. We are giving this vintage the time it deserves. Coming soon. Join the Wine Club for first access.

Tasting Notes

  • Bright garnet in colour.
  • Nose presents mushroom and spice with hints of morello cherries and leather.
  • Savoury oregano and lengthy complexity on the palate with a lingering, drying tannin finish.

What is the Sakura Awards?

The 2026 Sakura Japan Women’s Wine Awards is Asia’s largest international wine competition. Founded in 2014, it is the first wine competition in Japan judged exclusively by women. Over 4,000 wines from more than 30 countries are entered each year and blind tasted by a panel of 430 women wine professionals.

What makes this competition unique is its emphasis on food pairing. Wines are assessed not just on quality in the glass but specifically on how well they complement food, with a strong focus on Japanese and Asian cuisine. For Australian producers, recognition at the Sakura Awards carries real weight in the Asian hospitality and retail market.
